First Birthday and Family Session! | Virginia Beach Family Photographer

There’s nothing sweeter than getting to watch my littlest clients grow up! All these precious newborns who are now toddlers, but still have the same expressions they did when they were brand new. It always amazes me how fast they grow.

I love getting to catch up with parents and document the first birthday. There’s lot of ways to capture this milestone, and sometimes that just looks like an outdoor mini session! Check out this gorgeous little redhead and her smitten Mom and Dad. :)

A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.
— Agatha Christie

Although I’m done taking on sessions for 2018, I am currently booking into Spring/Summer of 2019. My weekend dates are always the first to go, so reach out soon if you have a date in mind! If you’re new here, I specialize in maternity, family and lifestyle newborn sessions.

Send me a quick email and let’s get your 2019 session on the books!

Best,

Erin

Virginia Beach Sunrise | Virginia Beach Family Photographer

No job is perfect, right? The only negative about being an outdoor, lifestyle family photographer is the weather! The forecast has been incredibly unpredictable in Hampton Roads this Summer. So many of my Virginia Beach oceanfront sessions have been rescheduled multiple times.

My good friend and photography student, Jill, had been so patient with the endless rescheduling. Finally, we opted for a sunrise session to avoid evening thunderstorms and it was magical! Well worth the early alarm and afternoon nap to make it happen. ;)

A great side effect? My husband loves when I work sunrise sessions because it means a Starbucks latte and chocolate croissant for him. His love language is baked goods, ha!

Jill is an incredibly talented photographer and has an IG account over at Elodie Grace Photography - be sure to follow her there! She has mentored with me several times and assisted during some of my sessions. I love her patience with learning, eye for details and how she documents her daughter's childhood so beautifully.

Here are just a few favorites from my morning with her sweet family!

We were together, I forget the rest.
— Walt Whitman

I'm all about splashing in the water at the end of a fun beach session! I love that Jill prioritized letting loose and connecting with her family. There is so much beauty in embracing the messy sometimes, right?

Friends, my 2018 calendar is nearly full. If you have been wanting a session, please reach out soon! Also, if you want to lock in a 2019 date at 2018 pricing, now's the time. Drop me a line below and let's get you scheduled! :)

Best,

Erin

Brock Environmental Center Sunset Session | Virginia Beach Family Photographer

Many of you will recognize this sweet family, but if you're new around here...you should know this is session number FIVE. I have watched them grow, have babies and chase toddlers. And now they are preparing to send their oldest daughter to Kindergarten this year. *sob*

Chris and Lacey are dear friends and it gives me so.much.joy to know my images are hanging in their house. It's been a year of change for them and I'm grateful these happy memories have been captured!

If you haven't had a chance to explore Brock Environmental Center, I highly recommend checking it out. The endless trails, wildlife and amazing sunset was the perfect setting for us!

Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.

These girls have the sweetest and silliest personalities! A perfect combination.

Just a reminder, weekend Fall dates are booking through November. Soon, I will email out details about Fall mini sessions to newsletter subscribers first. If you want to get on that list, sign up by clicking the link below! :)

Sunrise and Sandcastles | Virginia Beach Family Photographer

I photographed this sweet family last Fall and when Mom, Karen, reached out for a beach session, I was over the moon! Their son is a.dor.able and FULL of personality.

Little guy just turned two, and with an early bedtime, a sunset session felt like a reach. The solution? Sunrise! I mean, if we're all up early with little kids anyway - why not make it happen!? Some kids are just better in the early morning.. and honestly, I love it too.

Watching the sunrise and getting home before most of the world has even cracked their eyelids open is a pretty fantastic feeling. I know my non-morning friends are rolling their eyes, ha! But seriously, I'm an early morning convert in my mid-thirties. In fact, it's the ONLY way I'm getting 80% of my work done this Summer with both girls home.

The sun chased us this morning and it was windy, but I am in smitten with the effect. Email me for a sunrise session if you've got the babes and toddlers who go to bed before the sun. Let me assure you... it's worth the extra cup of coffee. Look at this cutie!

To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.

Friends, my Fall calendar is starting to fill up! With school-age kiddos of my own now, my weekend availability is very limited. If you've been wanting a Fall 2018 session, NOW is the time to book for the best availability!

Oh, this family. Where do I even start?

Such sweet friends that are moving -again- because that military life, ya'll. I could write about a zillion words on this fabulous crew, but instead - how about some fun, quick facts? ;)

1. Abigail and I are both ENFPs married to ISTJs. We laugh about this and swap hysterical stories all. the. time. These men are so very patient, ha!

2. I met her when we were both young, newly married English teachers back in 2006. :)

3. Watching our kids play together is probably one of the sweetest gifts of our friendship.

Aaaaand I'll stop here, because #feelings!

We chased some gorgeous light this night in Virginia Beach and I am so in love with all of these images. They love these sweet kiddos so well, and it's always such a joy to watch each of their unique personalities shine.

When was the last time you were photographed with your kids? Even if they have outgrown your lap, can I encourage you to get in front of the camera with them?

They deserve to see images of their Mom. They deserve to see your love for them pour out of a picture.

Friends, my Summer schedule is just about full! A handful of weeknight slots are available.

EAP is booking into mid-October and I'm so thankful! If weekends are ideal for your family's schedule, please contact me soon and we'll get you on the calendar!

xoxo

Winter 2018 Reads! | #EAPReads | Virginia Beach Family Photographer

One good thing about the weather during the colder months?

More time to READ! :)

If you know me, you know about my annual reading goals. If you're new around here, check out this blog post: 2018 Reading Goals!

Literally me at the library...

For 2018, I've given myself the goal of reading thirty books. So far, I'm making great progress and I'm working on book twelve right now. Here's what I've read so far this year!

What To Do When It's Your Turn by Seth Godin - A fun, quick and inspirational read if you've got dreams and feel like you need a permission slip to pursue them!

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek - I did cruise through this book quickly, I might need to revisit it.

The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide by Jenna Fischer - Any Office fans out there?! Let's just say, my love for Jenna Fischer is real and I loved reading about her experiences as a young actress in LA.

A Simplified Life: Tactical Tools for Intentional Living by Emily Ley - A great overview on how to simplify your life, especially for Moms.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng - Total page turner!!

Everything I never Told You by Celeste Ng - I loved the last book so much, I went on a quest to read everything written by this author.

Superfudge by Judy Blume - My husband gifted me Judy Blume's Masterclass on writing for Christmas with a signed copy of this book! Obviously, I cried. :)

The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Guide to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify by Francine Jay - Really useful book for starting and maintaining a minimal home life. The second half had lots of great tips on how to keep your house running smoothly. I need ALL the help I can get in this area!

The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking - This book made me want to cocoon in a blanket, drink hot tea....and move to Denmark, haha! I kid you not, it was the perfect Winter read.

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig - This was such a fun read, I didn't want it to end!

Rising Strong by Brene Brown - I had this checked out from the library, so I need to buy my own copy to mark up and highlight for a second reading. It's certainly one of those books that will stay with you and can change how you see yourself and others. Highly recommend!

Virginia-Beach-Family-Photographer

What have you been reading?! I'm always adding to my "must read" list, so leave a comment and let me know! I love books about self-improvement, business, faith, realistic and historical fiction, YA fiction, etc. Happy Reading, friends!

My Word for 2018 | #MomLife | Hampton Roads Family Photographer

This will be my third year choosing a word for the year. Which is a reminder to me that focusing (and refocusing) on just one word is so empowering and helpful!

In 2016, I chose Brave. For 2017,  I chose Intentional.

You can read more about them HERE

I'm seeing many of my goals from 2017 have shown up again for 2018. I think this is because many of them were big ideas, and ones that really need to be continually cultivated in my life. Like being present and intentional with my family time. That's something I will always put focus on - it's not something I can just put a pretty check mark beside.

For 2018, I do have more specific goals. Ones that are measurable and trackable. I think that's where I've felt frustrated in the past. This year, I am jumping on the Powersheets bandwagon and I am SO excited! If you've never heard of Lara Casey, I would strongly suggest giving her a follow. I have been a fan since 2015, right after reading her book, Make It Happen. But for some reason or other, I hadn't jumped in with her goal setting program yet.

hampton roads family photographer

Welp, after completing all my homework and getting my January tending list started - I am ready to rock my goals in 2018. I love the simplicity of the planner and how trackable and specific it allows you to get. AND the concept of slow progress - that we can change our goals with the seasons....gah, that is soooo me. I believe her one-year planners are sold out - but there are 6 month options still available.  I'm not getting paid for this, haha - I just really love it! :)

SO, now for my word...

For 2018, my word is Patient.

Patient: (adjective) able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.

Patient with myself and my slow progress.

Patient with other people. Especially those who might not think like me.

Patient with my family. They deserve my best and not the leftovers.

Patient with my health and self-care goals. Just keep doing the next right thing.

Patient in growing and managing this business of mine.

Patient in listening for God's voice amongst all the noise.

Wrapping up 2017! | Hampton Roads Family Photographer

For the last family session of 2017, I can't think of a more fitting family to capture! Dad just returned from deployment and this family of six is finally reunited. I couldn't be happier for them!

It had been two years since our last session and they have traveled the globe together and welcomed another baby. Blessings and sacrifices, but made stronger together. I'm so inspired by their connection and grace for one another. Here's to giving the people we love the very best of ourselves! They deserve it. :)

Saying goodbye to 2017 and looking ahead to a joyful 2018...

Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart. Like: “Why are we here?”, “And where do we go?”, and “How come it’s so hard?”. It’s not easy, and sometimes life can be deceiving - I’ll tell you thing: It’s always better when we’re together.”
— Jack Johnson

As I reflect back on all the fabulous families I've had the honor of photographing this year - I am so overwhelmed with gratitude. I'm already at work planning for an incredible 2018! Please remember, it's never too early to book a session.

Expecting a baby in 2018? Planning a family Summer vacation to Virginia Beach? I am currently booking sessions into August. I can't wait to see you next year!

Happy New Year! xoxo

'Only Little Once' Workshop | Hampton Roads Photography Education

Oh, Facebook Memories. Gets me EVERY time. I open up my FB app and am suddenly inundated with adorable images of my babies. WHY must they grow so fast!? I'm proud and broken-hearted all at the same time. Word on the street? This doesn't end.

Ain't no 'hood like Motherhood.

It's been amazing to watch my girls grow and change - but these snapshots are also a great reminder of how MY photography has grown! I was that Mom with the new DSLR taking ALL the pictures in Auto mode with no idea how to manipulate natural light or what all the buttons meant on my fancy camera.

Can you relate? While reading this if you find yourself nodding in agreement, then I have a photography workshop just for you! In the years I've been offering "Only Little Once" it has grown to share the love of photography with dozens of local Moms and hobbyists.

I'm gonna have to take a moment to humble brag on a few ladies. Here are their amazing before and afters! You guys - this is better than those weight loss side-by-side comparisons, LOL!

Hampton Roads Photography Education

MomTog Kristen has grown SO much in a short time. From auto mode with on-camera flash to manual mode with natural light. Check out her photography journey over on her Facebook page:

Little Moments Photography by Kristen Stewart

MomTog Abigail has grown leaps and bounds! Although she had dabbled with manual mode before the workshop, she struggled with nailing focus and accurate white balance. She now captures beautiful and timeless images of her kiddos straight out of camera. No editing necessary! ;)

MomTog Emily loved taking pictures of her littles, but was still frustrated with settings. She's now confident in her skills and is dabbling with editing! Love this before and after of her oldest girl. :)

The Facebook group is so motivational and positive!
— Kristen

After the workshop, all attendees are added to our VIP Grad Facebook group. It's a thriving community of supportive Moms and hobbyists just like you. No big, scary page with thousands of other strangers. Just a tight-knit group of ladies who love taking pictures of their littles, pets, and the world around them. It's a safe place to grow, ask questions and find inspiration. You'll also be able to join in our PhotoWalks we have 1-2 times a year. Check them out here:

We can't wait for you to join us! :)

Dreamy Sunset Maternity Session | Hampton Roads Family and Newborn Photographer

It has been 5+ years since I carried my last baby. It feels like an eternity and also as if it just happened yesterday. Your body and your heart remembers. I remember the weight of my belly and the almost other-worldly experience of feeling my baby kick.

Despite the heartburn, swollen ankles and mood swings - I enjoyed both of my pregnancies. I don't take for granted my health and the uncomplicated births of my daughters. When I see a woman nearing the end of her pregnancy, I smile with the knowing. Mothers get it. We see all the beauty and sometimes discomfort of that life season - and sometimes we stare. Not in a creepy way, but just with a sigh of remembering.

Getting a chance to photograph this gorgeous Momma and her beau just a couple of weeks before her due date was such a gift! She visited my sweet and talented pal, Meg with Blushtones and got seriously dolled up and pampered! Nothing better than getting spoiled with professional makeup right before baby arrives. :)

We hopped around to two different locations until the sun was completely gone. I love that dreamy time right at dusk. Those images are so full of emotion! Sharing just a few favorites....

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
— Osho

Are you expecting in 2018? Congratulations! I offer a maternity and newborn bundle for parents! Send me a note with your due date and let's start planning. :)
