Gorgeous Fall Sunset Maternity Session | Hampton Roads Maternity Photographer

It has been an amazing Fall full of golden sunset sessions! I love my time with every family, but couples expecting their first baby have a special place in my heart. Their excitement, joy and love for each other shines out in every image.

I’m so honored to capture just a small part of their story. And someday, I hope this sweet girl sees these pictures and knows how deeply her parents loved her from the start.

Here are just a few favorites from our golden hour session in Chesapeake, Virginia!

2018 is wrapping up, friends! If you are shopping this Black Friday and Small Business Saturday - be on the lookout for ways to save with my small biz. Here are just a couple of things happening:

  • Only Little Once: A Photography Workshop for Parents is coming in January! Gift cards are available to claim a seat. Read about the class HERE!

  • Gift a session to your wife, Mom or BFF! Gift cards are available in any amount and make a great stocking stuffer for the photo-lover in your life. Contact me and I’ll pop a pretty gift card in the mail for you!

  • A special BOGO deal is currently running for previous EAP families! I will share any remaining spots left on my Facebook and Instagram pages through the weekend.

Wishing your family a joyful Thanksgiving!

Fall Maternity Sunset Session | Virginia Beach Maternity Photographer

Hurricane Florence, scheduling conflicts and about a zillion mosquitoes tried to put a damper on this maternity session…but, YOU GUYS! How beautiful are these two? Not only were they beyond gracious with rescheduling (thank you!!) but showed up and were SO willing to go all in at the session.

THIS is what I love. Couples who are comfortable together and accept all my awkward chatter and jokes, ha!

Call me sentimental, but I always think about the babies who will grow up and look at these images of their parents. Any rare photo I’ve seen of my mother pregnant, just takes my breath away. So much love is there already. What a gift to capture!

Losing my mind over this gorgeousness…

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

Fall sessions are nearly booked! Just a handful of weekday slots are left, friends. 2019 slots are beginning to fill as well, SO snag those dates under 2018 pricing. ;)

Best,

Erin

Stories.

This is what I love about my work. True, I don't have to share a family's story with you... and I don't always because, well, it's not mine to tell. But I love to share just a bit about what makes a couple unique. Especially two people who are so vibrant and clearly in love as these two.

Some couples are a testimony. A promise that we can see and hug and believe. That even though we don't know the plans, God has our best intentions at heart. I got to witness that while reading over the questionnaire that soon-to-be-Mom, Heather, submitted after booking their maternity session. They were in town for their baby shower and surrounded my friends who radiated their joy with them! What a gift to witness.

Thank you for letting me a small part of this special day, Heather and Michael!

Are you visiting Virginia Beach this Summer?

Well, I'd love to meet you and help tell your family's story. Let me know when you'll be in town and we'll get your session on the calendar!

Best,

Erin

How to Rock your Maternity Session! | Hampton Roads Maternity Photographer

hampton-roads-maternity-photographer

If you've recently scheduled a maternity session, chances are you're feeling super excited to document this time with your spouse! Maternity sessions are such a unique way to show your kids how much you loved and adored them - before they even arrived. My girls love to see pictures of me when I was pregnant with them. I truly wish I had more to share with them, which is another reason I'm passionate about maternity photography.

If you're wanting to absolutely -rock- your maternity session, here are five quick tips to help!

Hampton-Roads-maternity-photographer-12.jpg

1. Time it right! Every Mom is different, but around week 28-32 is a good time to schedule a maternity session. Depending on how you feel going into the 3rd trimester, you might want  earlier. Ultimately, you know you're body best - so chat with your photographer about what works best for you!

2. Location, location, location. Choose a location that compliments your style and overall family 'vibe'. You might be drawn to an open field at sunset, the beach, forest, downtown street, or your own home. If you hate the feel of sand on your toes (or it's mid-January) than the beach might not be your ideal location. Work with your photographer and brainstorm some of your own suggestions!

3. Treat yo'self! When you feel good about yourself - that confidence shines through in images. I'm a big advocate of having professional hair and makeup down for maternity sessions. That extra polish to bring out your natural beauty will have you feeling fabulous! Or, you could opt for a pedicure (since you can't really reach your toes anymore!) or having a friend curl your hair. Whatever works for you, your budget and helps you feel your best - is a win!

4. Take an outfit test drive. Shortly before your session, have a quick fashion show in your favorite maternity session outfit options. Have a trusted friend or your spouse (if he can be trusted, lol!) to give you any last minute tips. Do you need to add jewelry or a pop of color? Narrow down your choices and get everything prepped for photo day!

5. Date your spouse! On picture day, keep everything low stress. Love on your husband and be excited for this bonus date night together before baby's arrival! Schedule dinner for after the session or pick up ice cream on the way home. Make it more about spending an evening out together than a formal picture day where everything has to be perfect. That joy and ease will translate beautifully into your final images!

Dreamy Sunset Maternity Session | Virginia Beach Maternity Photographer

I love meeting other Hampton Roads locals - it makes me feel like we really do live in a smaller, closer knit community. Most families and couples I photograph aren't originally from this area, so when I find someone, I kind of geek out haha!

Lucy is from Chesapeake and is someone I would have befriended in school for several reasons. One reason is she's tall too - woohoo! She also let slip that she's a Harry Potter fan as well... so clearly we were destined to meet. ;)

Part of my work is noticing details in relationships. Small gestures that speak volumes about a couple. It was very chilly out, and Jim kept covering Lucy's shoulders with her coat in between location changes. It was such a sweet peek into who they are together. That kind of love shows up on camera, friends. It makes my job even sweeter!

I can honestly say, they are going to rock this whole parenthood gig. :) Looking forward to meeting their baby girl very soon!

Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me ... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.

Brock Environmental Center was the perfect location for our session. There are parts and sections that don't even feel like you're in Virginia Beach. For example, while capturing the image below, I poked my knee on a cactus, ha!

Are you looking forward to your own maternity session? Yay! Here's a tip, friends:

Treat it like a date night! Make dinner reservations for after, see a movie or just enjoy the day together. It helps ease any picture day anxieties you might have and feels like a special mini vacay from all your adulting and pre-parenting duties. :)

Golden Hour at Pleasure House Point | Hampton Roads Maternity Photographer

The BEST part of the maternity/newborn package is that I get to meet and connect with couples before baby arrives. I -love- this opportunity to get to know them and tell the complete story. When I come to see them for the newborn session, we're already comfy together and it's just effortless. Incredibly grateful for all the sweet parents who trust me with their memories. #bestjobever

These images will show their son how excited and in love they were - even before he arrived. I think as kids grow, that is such an important fact for them to know. There's comfort and a sense of stability in knowing your parents are in love. Even if they complain during PDAs, ha! ;)

Luckily, the weather warmed up just enough for Sydney and Kenneth to meet me over at one of my favorite locations. Gorgeous light and a stunning couple - I was pretty much blissful, ya'll. We laughed the entire time and they tolerated my corny jokes, haha! #sograteful

These two are beautiful inside and out. Loved getting to know them!

No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you’re the only one who knows the sound of my heart from the inside.

Are you expecting this Spring/Summer? I'd love to meet your family and capture this special time in your lives! Drop me a line and let me know your due date. :)

Exploring Downtown Portsmouth's Historic District | Hampton Roads Maternity Photographer

When I discovered that soon-to-be new mom, Mollie, was a die hard Disney fan.... I knew she was a quality person. Hahaha! But really, these two are such a joy! They are new to the area after spending several years in sunny Florida. Both are patiently waiting on their first baby and I am so excited to capture this time for them!

Mollie chose Downtown Portsmouth as the backdrop for her maternity session and we had fun exploring. I love that you can take a few steps and have a completely different pocket of light, buildings and atmosphere. We certainly had enough to choose from. I love when a couple is up for anything with their maternity session and let me experiment and try different locations.

Soon, I'll be getting word that baby has arrived and we'll be scheduling their newborn session. I can't waaaait and I know they are SO ready to become parents! With their ease and obvious love for each other, they've got the tools needed for adjusting to life with a newborn. Having a sense of humor about life helps when you're sleep deprived! ;)

Thank you Mollie and Colin for trusting me to tell your story!

...until you have a baby, you don’t ever realize how much you were missing one.

Dreamy Sunset Maternity Session | Hampton Roads Family and Newborn Photographer

It has been 5+ years since I carried my last baby. It feels like an eternity and also as if it just happened yesterday. Your body and your heart remembers. I remember the weight of my belly and the almost other-worldly experience of feeling my baby kick.

Despite the heartburn, swollen ankles and mood swings - I enjoyed both of my pregnancies. I don't take for granted my health and the uncomplicated births of my daughters. When I see a woman nearing the end of her pregnancy, I smile with the knowing. Mothers get it. We see all the beauty and sometimes discomfort of that life season - and sometimes we stare. Not in a creepy way, but just with a sigh of remembering.

Getting a chance to photograph this gorgeous Momma and her beau just a couple of weeks before her due date was such a gift! She visited my sweet and talented pal, Meg with Blushtones and got seriously dolled up and pampered! Nothing better than getting spoiled with professional makeup right before baby arrives. :)

We hopped around to two different locations until the sun was completely gone. I love that dreamy time right at dusk. Those images are so full of emotion! Sharing just a few favorites....

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

When to Schedule Your Session | Hampton Roads Family Photographer

You've decided that THIS is the year to update your family pictures. The last time you got pictures together, your youngest was still in diapers and now he is fast approaching Kindergarten.

Needless to say - it's been awhile!

Scheduling and planning for a photography session can seem a bit overwhelming, but it shouldn't be. Consider these few points when scheduling and hopefully it'll all flow smoothly!

Hampton Roads family photographer
  1. Consider the Season - Are you warm weather fans? Or do you love the crispness of Fall? If you don't love the heat - waiting to schedule photos for July or August in Hampton Roads might not be very comfortable. Especially since cuddling and closeness is so important during a session! #hellohumidity
  2. Sunset timing - The hour before sunset (aka The Golden Hour) is usually prime time for photographers. It's not the only time, but it does possess a certain magic. The later Summer months have a very late sunset time. If you have little ones who go to bed by 7pm, this might be something to consider when scheduling.
  3. It should work for YOU - Aim for a season when your family has limited stress, obligations, soccer games or to-do's. This isn't always possible, but if you have some downtime coming up - pencil your session in during those weeks if possible. That relaxed feeling and vibe will translate into beautiful images!
  4. Book Early - If you have your heart set on a certain window of time - book early! Have a kid's birthday fast approaching and want to document this stage? Don't hesitate to reach out early and get on the books.

That's it! Just a few things to consider when planning ahead for a photography session. Stay flexible, (because, kids!) but creating the right environment for a session certainly pays off. Set yourself up for success. You won't regret it!

Beat the Summer rush and get on the schedule. I'm currently booking through August and would love to see you. Let's make some memories! :)

Baby Jay | Hampton Roads Newborn Photographer

I have a love/loath relationship with the military. As a Navy brat and VB local, I have said goodbye to countless friends throughout the span of my lifetime. I still miss my bestie from second grade - if you're reading this Felicia, hey, girl! LOL!

That said, I can forgive when the military swings in my favor and dear friends return. It had been at least five years since I saw Anna, but when you bond over playdates with fussy babies and toddlers - you're friends for life. Nothing beats those friendships made in early motherhood, I was truly saved by my Mom's club in 2010 and I love keeping in touch with these women. When I transitioned from working full time to mothering full time it. was. tough. I am grateful for the support and friendships I made during that season of life.

Anna recently welcomed her fourth baby (yep, you read that right!) and she is just as gorgeous, calm and confident as I remember. I was excited to visit with her AND to document her latest arrival. We had a fun Mommy/Baby session with an occassional appearance from big sister #2!

Baby Jay really wanted to sleep, and it was fun to capture his sleepy smirks. Loads of personality already, I love how expressive he is at just one month old. Isn't he sweet?

Big sis was running laps and belting out Frozen, so I had to capture it.

Life as it is. Perfectly imperfect.

Up in the nursery, Anna laughed and sighed over the worn look of the crib. I was enamored with it (of course) because of the story it told. This is the crib that has held all of her babies.. how precious! I loved that we were able to document it and that baby #4 is just as cozy as his siblings were once.

Kitty was not sure what to make of me, haha! I love incorporating fur babies during a session. He was so stoic here, I couldn't resist.

I am so happy you are back, Anna! And so thankful I could photograph your sweet little man, he is just perfection. Welcome home, Jay!

Friends, I am currently filling my Spring and Summer calendar. If you are pregnant, now is a great time to book! I work around due dates and leave plenty of room in the schedule for newborn sessions throughout the year. I'd love to photograph you during this special season.
